World Cynosport Rally Board Member of the Week: Kristen Hurwitz

Meet another board member dedicated to WCR rally! By Brenna Fender

The World Cynosport Rally (WCR) Board consists of Barbara Burri, Janet Gaunt, Wendy Hilton, Kristen Hurwitz, Casey Lomonaco, Rita Ann Monde, Nancy Reyes, Kim Wilson, and Amy Wukotich. Over the next few weeks, we will be learning more about these folks through in-depth interviews here on the WCR website.

Today we are getting to know Kristen Hurwitz. Kristen lives in Pound Ridge, New York, with CJ (Cedarwood's Blazing Pursuit CDX, BN, RE, STAR, CGC, CDX-C, RLP (AOE), RL1 (AOE), CC), who is 3.5 years old, and four-month-old Freddie (Sunjays Ballroom Dancer). Labrador Retriever CJ was nationally ranked with APDT rally at #1 RLP in 2010 and #1 RL1 in 2012. Although she's had Labs her entire life, Kristen recently added a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Freddie) to her house. Freddie will do rally when he gets older. Kristen's previous Laborador Retriever, Kali (ARCHEX T-Bar Country Kali CDX, RAE, UD-H, CD-HCH, RL3X2 (AOE), RL2X3 (MCL), R1X3 (MCL), CGC, TDIA, TT, CC), was nationally ranked in APDT at #17, #1 Lab in 2004, #10 and #2 Lab in 2005, and #4 and #1 Lab in 2007. Kali passed away in 2010. Kristen says that her occupation is as a full-time volunteer: "After chairing or secretary-ing several annual dog events and serving on my my daughter's PTA board and many of its committees, who has time for a 'real' job?"

Brenna Fender: How long have you been involved in rally?

Kristen Hurwitz: Since 2002

What other dog sports do you participate in?

AKC and CDSP obedience, AKC rally, and K9 Nosework.

What do you like about World Cynosport Rally?

I love that the courses are a challenge and you can choose to reward your dog for a well-executed exercise. I love the inclusion of Open/Utility based exercises in the upper levels. I love the ringside camaraderie, even among strangers. I love the venue has a space for puppies, veterans, and junior handlers.

What inspired you to become a board member for WCR?

I have been in rally since 2002 and served on the APDT Host Organization Guideline Committee, drawing up the first draft of those regulations. I have served many years as an APDT trial chair and secretary. I have been on the board, and am past president, of a large dog training club, so I understand the need to listen to all parties and let the majority rule, even if it's not something you particularly like. As someone who steps up to do work, not just talk, I thought my experience in the sport and drive to accomplish goals could be useful.

Do you currently serve on other boards or as an officer in other organizations, dog-related or otherwise?

My home club is Port Chester Obedience Training Club in White Plains, New York. I've been a member since 1999 and served on the board from 2001-2008, and was president from 2003-2007. I am the club's perennial obedience/rally trial chair (2005-present). I am also a member Pioneer Valley Labrador Retriever Club (2005-present). I was co-chair of the 2011 Labrador Inc. national specialty obedience trial. I also serve as membership chair for my local PTA, am co-chair of their yearbook committee, and serve on several other PTA committees.

Do you have family members who are involved in dog sports as well?

My nearly seven-year-old daughter started training the family dog, CJ, last summer, and last fall showed in both APDT pre-juniors and Companion Dog Sports Program novice obedience. She is l
