Rachel Brostrom Rally Volunteer of the Year 2021 500

Rachel Brostrom of Ashburnham, Mass., has been named World Cynosport® Rally Limited (WCRL) Volunteer of the Year for 2021.

The WCRL Rally Volunteer of the Year Award was created in 2020 to recognize individuals who have contributed freely to the service of others at rally events. Rachel was nominated by Barb Burri, who wrote, "Rachel brought WCRL to New England and encouraged us all to try it and some of us to judge. She is a great judge and huge supporter of trials throughout the area."

Rachel first became involved in rally in 2005 and has been teaching at Monadnock Human Society in Swanzey, N.H., for more than 15 years. She also has been a judge for over 10 years, working all over New England and beyond.

Her volunteer activities include serving on the WCRL Competition Rules Advisory Board in 2017-18; and as Trial Chair for the first Rally World Championships (WCRL) in 2016; Trial Chair for New England Rally Obedience Enthusiasts (NEROE) from 2011 to 2018; and Trial Secretary for all WCRL/APDT rally trials at Monadnock for the past 13 years.

Expressing appreciation for the award, Rachel said, "I'm so thankful for such a wonderful dog sport! Rally has brought so much to my life. Through our classes at Monadnock and the wonderful trials we host, we have built a strong following of friends and fans. I love being at trials and seeing all my friends (and their dogs) step into the ring and complete a course, smiling and enjoying their connection, celebrating with their dog. Someone mentioned the 'Spirit of Rally' to me quite some time ago, and I think about that a lot. At our trials, we often joke that 'There's no crying in rally,' but because of the bond with our dogs and our feelings for our friends—there can be so much happy crying in rally!"

Rachel and her dogs actively compete in rally, agility and obedience, and over the years have "played in herding, conformation, tracking and a variety of fun training endeavors," she said.

"In WCRL, my dogs have been ranked in the year-end rankings, including the Overall Top 20, multiple years with multiple dogs," she added. "I have titled my dogs in WCRL/APDT rally in the puppy class, through multiple ARCHMX titles and in the veteran class over the years. These dogs include Australian Shepherds Kobe, Libby, Georgia and Bruno, and our special Corgi, Mighty Maximus, who worked with my daughter when the junior class was offered many years ago. Currently, I'm working with Georgia and Bruno, and enjoying all the challenges of balancing helping others with their dogs and finding time to train my own crew!"
